Potential Beneficial Uses of Produced Water: Issues, Opportunities and Challenges

While acknowledging that the regulatory aspects of treating produced water for beneficial reuse could easily be included in this talk, this presentation will instead focus on the technical, environmental and economic challenges associated with the potential treatment of produced water. Along with a discussion of popular treatment technologies and their applicability to certain produced waters, this presentation will also address the often over-looked by-products of this treatment such as waste generation and disposal along with the associated cost and transportation. Additionally, power demands of various size treatment facilities will be addressed along with potential effects on the local environment and demand on the power grid. Finally, the presentation will focus on several promising technologies that offer potential solutions to many of these hurdles.
